The National Association of Graduate Teachers(NAGRAT) has described as unacceptable the Education Minister’s claim that teachers were not being promoted on merits.
Education Minister Dr. Opoku Prempeh has recently stated that teachers in public schools ought to endeavor to live up to their responsibilities and the teaching standards in their profession.
Speaking at the 5th graduation of the Jackson College of Education in Kumasi, Dr. Opoku Prempeh alleged that some teachers were being promoted without the necessary assessment and interview.
He stated that teachers ought to show a high sense of discipline, commitment, and respect for their profession so that they may be able to upgrade the quality of education delivery.
“The Ministry is determined to ensuring that teachers’ promotion is based on competence, hard work and other relevant requirements per the National Teachers Council’s demands”, he noted.
But the Vice President of NAGRAT, Angel Carbonu disagrees with the Minister on his claims calling on him to apologize for his distasteful remarks.
“Promotion have never been wholesale in the Ghana Education Service, and I’m expecting the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service to have responded to the Minister and correct the Minister, and let the Minister know that he has cast a slur on the integrity and image of teachers in this country by creating the impression that promotion is wholesale in the Ghana education Service. Promotion have always been on merits, have always been on assessment, it’s always based on appraisals and interviews, therefore as NAGRAT we reject this statement and we will want the Minister to come and apologize to teachers for casting a slur on our image in the public eye.”

@kojo are you a teacher? If you don't know any fact about teachers salary arrears a suggest you ***barred word*** and don't attack any one. What Tee said is the truth. Since 2013 some teachers have not been paid their arrears.
Yaw, teachers alone do not contribute to the success of your children in academics. If you as a parent do jot support the teachers effort will be fruitless. For English language we all do our best as teachers although there may be some challenges. I guese you are not the best person to consult for English language, therefore I advised that, the little you know you can teach your children if you think teachers are not good enough, you can teach your own children at home.thanks
Nagrat should give us a "break". A lot of teachers don't teach during classes ,rather they organise extra classes and extort money from parents. Some don't even care when their students fail. God is watching all of us.
eii Tee since 2013? why were you sleeping for all those years?
What is this attention seeker talking about? It is only in Ghana that you will have a teacher preside on 0% failure for years and still be promoted. Promotion based on number of years served and not on output is what the Hon Minister is referring to. Thumbs up Minister
What do you expect from someone with such a name "Carbanu" . Very aggressive. Even if the spits he will call for an apology.
Hon minister, you are on point! Sometimes you hear some teachers expressing themselves in the queen's language and you want to hide out of sheer embarrassment. Some pupils are suffering!
Well said chairman, the minister should apologised and pay our salary arrears since 2013, its long overdue.
