Minister of Education, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh has warned school authorities collecting unapproved fees from parents to desist from it.
“One challenge is school authorities flouting our orders. We have given out the implementation guidelines and so school authorities who will flout it; collecting money here and there will be dealt with drastically...” he told Kwami Sefa Kayi in an interview on Peace FM's morning show ‘Kokrokoo’.
Reports went viral of some school authorities allegedly charging unapproved fees.
This follows the commencement of the flagship programme of the ruling government; free Senior High School (SHS) policy.
The much touted policy commenced on Monday, September 11, 2017.
In addition to tuition which is already free, fees for boarding, admission, library, examination, computer lab, science centre, feeding, utilities, text books and meals for day students have been taken up by the government.

You haven't seen anything yet. Do you think the head teachers who had enjoyed their soli for a long time, admission time being their cocoa season would sit down for your to come and spoil their game with your half baked free SHS? Some of them built their houses and bought their cars through these means so its not going to be easy implementing your guidelines successfully. The teacher and their heads will definitely sabotage the program if they think it would take away most of their advantages they have enjoyed in the past.
No proper planning, just come out say free and everyone is jumping up and down. Black man mentality, we have brains but can not think far. Why on earth should a minister, medical doctors, bank managers, accountants and all company owners take their kids to schools for free while we continue borrowing and begging for monies from white men? do we really think? This is why whites sometimes lough at us. Even with their monies and everything they don't build boarding schools to feed families for free. Schools are rather built near communities so children can go and return home. How can Ghana be deleted this way? I am sorry but we don't think far.
Ghanaians are too stubborn. I believe, if two or three are punished the rest will stop. Mr. Minister find and use a scapegoat and rest will naturally stop.
Right, we commend the sitting government for the Free SHS, though it was not fully what they promised. however not to politicize it, if Mahama the former president of Ghana had not renovated and built some schools and provided them with facilities, free SHS would have been a fiasco.as a matter of fact the current administration would have serious task ahead. Be as it may, i think there are more schools and learning materials needed. would the president provide that? or students in other regions will go to school free and still not have any learning materials. if so then i think is not as free, access, equity and quality as we've been made to believe. Ghanaians should open their eyes because is not all about drinking ice water on the streets of accra. because earning facilities are more important than just making education free. Many Thanks
Government has given expressed warning against such acts, what the heck for these charges? They are akin to those galamseyers who are being rounded up by the Operation Vanguard squad. They should be equally arrested, period!.
AFTER THIS WARNING A WATCH GROUP SHOULD BE SET UP THEN PARENTS ALSO SHOULD REPORT SUCH WICKED PEOPLE TO BE ARRESTED AND SEND TO COURT MOST WHO ARE AGENTS FOR THOSE WORKING AGAINST IT. PARENTS SHOULD SAVE THOSE MONIES FOR OTHER INVESTMENTS FOR THE FUTURE PLANS.SOME HEAD TEACHERS ARE ENEMIES TO PROGRESS.
