Founder and leader of the All People’s Party (APC), Hassan Ayariga has described the introduction of the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy as a scholarship plan by the Nana Addo-led government.
He lauded government for fulfilling its promise – but noted that the policy will be a disaster if it focuses on students grade.
“The Free SHS is very good but I see it as a scholarship instead of a free education for all. What happens to a student with aggregate 37 or 40 when you tell her to better her grades before entering the Senior High School?”
“Then we will end up getting more dropouts than graduates. I think government should just forget about the grades and allow every student who deserves it to get the chance,” he said in an interview with NEAT FM’s morning show ‘Ghana Montie’.
Hassan Ayariga's comments comes after Education Minister, Mathew Opoku Prempeh emphasized that only students who pass their examination will have the opportunity to enjoy the government’s Free SHS policy in September.
But Ayariga indicated that if government proceed with the “pass BECE and qualify for free SHS” cliché, the programme will remain selective and will benefit students who attended relatively good private JHS than those in the public JHS in the rural areas, especially girls who could not meet the cut-off point”.

Hmm...Why would you go to school, spend 1,095 days in school, and come with aggregate 40? Who does that? And Ayariga, is that suppose to encourage children to learn. Am not surprised, after allowing people like you enter politics, how would you think there should be any criteria for anything again. Wo b3b) 3wa no aky3 papapapa...
I think this idea is good so that the children will be force to learn hard. We don't need to joke when it comes to learning and which of the high level school will take aggregate 37 to 40. Let us be honest and speak the truth. God bless Ghana!!
i can see people who does not want Ghana progress, and their own is to spend and promote inequality in the country, Ayariga this shows that you dont love Ghana or you dont want the country move to prosperity direction, we should be happy this is in and we should look the way forward with positivity
What is he talking about? Aren't primary school kidsasked to repeat their classes when they fail? Let us get serious as a nation, criticise constructively to move our nation forward.
This guy again he want to be heard, he's been silence for awhile.. Hahaha such a guy want to be president of Ghana, i can't think far!!!!!!
