Chief of Akwamu Adumasa, Nana Ansah Kwao IV, has disclosed he was kicked out of many schools in Ghana because he had Dyslexia, a condition that made it difficult for him to express himself on paper.
Asked by Bola Ray on Starr Chat on Wednesday which schools he attended, Nana said he attended schools such as Jack N Jill, Accra Academy, Martin De Porres, North Ridge School, Mpraeso Secondary among others because he struggled to express himself on paper hence he was kicked out of one school to the other.
“I struggled and I was kicked out of schools because I was Dyslexic, I struggled before I could finish my ‘O’ level. I can’t put the things I express on paper and I didn’t realize I had Dyslexia back then until I sent my son to school in the UK and he exhibited the same traits and the teachers informed me about it.
So back here in Ghana the schools couldn’t detect I was suffering from Dyslexia, so I got kicked out of one school to the other. I have serious Dyslexia. I could only write in capital letters, my handwriting was bad. I really struggled,” he told Bola Ray.
Dyslexia is a lifelong condition that makes it difficult for people to read. Dyslexia is mainly a problem with reading accurately and fluently.
Kids with dyslexia may have trouble answering questions about something they’ve read. But when it’s read to them, they may have no difficulty at all.
Dyslexia can create difficulty with other skills, however. These include Reading Comprehension, Spelling, Writing and Math.

If you don't know about this condition, do some research before u come on here to spew garbage. Who told u a person with dyslexia can't be articulate, read or write? Are u confusing autism with dyslexia? Read before u jump on the bandwagon. I personally know someone who is an actress in uk (Kara Tointon) who spoke about her challenges as a person with this condition to achieve simple basic tasks. She's very talented and has a lot going for her. She's able to achieve a lot because of early diagnosis and special help and assistance given her. So before u are quick to make mockery or doubt someone's condition, make damn sure u know what u talking about. Ignorance is indeed bliss.
Being dyslexic doesnt mean you cant be articulate. Yes reading and marhs might be a problem but there are strategies that can be used to assist the child handle this challenge. In actual fact most dyslexic are vety creative thinkers. They thrive in other areas especially the arts. Because they cant express themselves on paper, they do that in drawing, imaginative story telling and acting. I think teachers around the world should understand that every child is different and should be treated as such. Lets stop putting all children in one box.
Thanks Walash for this insightful education.
Dyslexia is with so many people in Ghana but they don't even know. . . And who said if you are dyslexic you cannot read? John F Kennedy, George Washington & George W ***barred word***, all of these Presidents of the United States of America were/are dyslexic. Richard Branson of virgin group of companies, Albert Einstein, One of the most influential physicists in history who developed the laws of relativity and shaped the ways we think of the world today. Whoopi Goldberg Comedian, political activist but more recently talk show host. Whoopi is one of a handful of people to win an Oscar, a Grammy, a Tony and an Emmy. Tom Cruise Blockbuster action film actor Cruise was diagnosed with Dyslexia age 7 but that didn’t stop him. “I’d try to concentrate on what I was reading, then I’d get to the end of the page and have very little memory of anything I’d read”. He eventually adopted unique techniques in order to learn his lines and went on to be a multi award winning Hollywood star! The list goes on and on and myself, I am and I just finished uni with first class honours in 2016.
Thank you Frank! He was a lazy student and always skipped school to do "big" things out of school. Known him forever.
"not necessary...he should have avoided saying this..Ghanaian will definitely make some fuse out of this" Dela is very very very very necessary because I have never known this Dyslexia and today is my first time hearing it. You wait and see very soon an NGO will come out on this very Dyslexia problem.
I agree with you oh now, in UK both children and adult with dyslexia are given special attention when studyimg. they are even given more time to return their books when they borrow books from the library. Ghana teachers should know about it.
not necessary...he should have avoided saying this..Ghanaian will definitely make some fuse out of this...
What I know about dyslexia is that one does not outgrow it. How then are you able to read and speak so fluently now? Being dyslexic doesn’t reflect low intelligence nor does it mean you can’t be successful in life, but the reading and speaking difficulty will persist in adult life. Ansah Kwao, was that really the problem with you? Just wondering, because I think you are very articulate.
Who diagnosed you with Dyslexia? Are you sure that your head no die??
