Minister for Employment and Labour Relations, Haruna Iddrisu, has officially inaugurated the Ghana Association of Private Employment Agencies (GHAPEA).
The association is licence and registered by government of Ghana to recruit Ghanaians seeking to work abroad especially in the Middle East legally.
In an address to members and the media at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC) yesterday, the minister gave a 24-hour ultimatum to the Chief Labour Office at the Labour Department under his ministry to publish in all the state national dailies names of legally registered private employment agencies to enable the general public to deal with the right agencies.
To do this, the minister called on the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) to strengthen security at the boarders to eliminate human trafficking and illegal immigration.
He cautioned that government will deal ruthlessly with anyone who will flaunt the laws governing migration.
Vice Chairperson of GHAPEA, Alhaji Saeed Shereef, in his welcome address said the association which serves as the trade association representing Ghana’s private employment services both at national and international levels was poised to play the leading role in the sensitization of the private employment services industry.
He assured the gathering that GHAPEA is committed to promoing fair and ethical recruitment and employment practices, to cooperate and align esteemed international institutions such as the United Nations, International Organization for Migration, International Labour Organization and Global Forum on Migration and Development.
Alhaji Shereef reiterated that the aim of GHAPEA is to make illegal migration legal due to the serious challenges some Ghanaians go through in the hands of illegal immigrants agencies.
“We are to ensure that Ghanaians who travel outside country to seek opportunity do not die on the desert, get drown in the high seas, or maltreated,” he opined.
Currently GHAPEA has 22 legally registered and licence agencies that recruit Ghanaians to work abroad legally.
Recent reports of Ghanaians stranded and being maltreated in Saudi Arabian, Kuwait and Qatar due to activities of illegal agents necessitated the formation of the Group.Unfortunately, there are over 200 illegal agents that exploit innocent young man and woman ,using illegal means.
